Marcelo walks around his class to offer tips on 1-Leg X-Guard Retention: The Single-Leg X-Guard Position (a.k.a. One-Legged X, Anaconda-Guard, Kuzure-Ashi-Garami, et al.) is oftentimes best used as a method of keeping a much larger and heavier opponent at a distance; do so by placing the sole of your foot on your opponent's hip to help press their weight away from you. Some tournament rules do not allow one to legally cross their toes medially against the leg as a Knee-Reap. Even if it is allowed in competition, sometimes a bigger opponent will be able to close the distance on you since you cannot readily push them off with the bottom of your foot safely. In the event that your opponent clear your hooks, leaving you only with control over their foot, be prepared to stiff-arm their hips long enough to fend off their incoming pressure and reinsert your leg-hooks. Immediately, follow up your recovery by continuing into an attack of your own; in this case, a 1Leg-X Sweep to take top.
