Ghost Escape vs Side Control
Advanced Lesson -- Master Fabio Gurgel adds some more enlightening details for escaping from Side-Control: Your far-arm cannot effectively break the posture of your opponent with just a bump aimed at their neck or shoulder; you must specifically target your opponent's head to move them off line and create space. However, you must also respect their ability to claim dominion over your arm with an attacking Under-Hook, so don't allow your opponent to capitalize on an open elbow. Once you've bridged and turned onto your side, remembering to blade your shoulder at an angle, you can now lift your legs and drive yourself away for even more space with a Hip-Escape. If your movements create a large enough gap, you can execute a maneuver colloquially referred to as a Ghost-Escape; wherein, you hang off of their arm and rotate all the way through towards the outside, spinning around until you arrive on top in a Front Head-Lock.
