Marcelo deflects into an contingent pass against direct opposition: If you feel your opponent clamping down and crossing their feet behind your knee to block you from executing a full backswing retraction with the Standing-Step Pass, immediately switch gears and thrust your knee forward, driving your weight up the middle and across their thigh for a Knee-Slide Pass. Seek to establish top-positioning by pummeling your arm into a far-side Under-Hook whjle also looking to connect your hands together behind a Cross-facing head-control. Right as you iniaite the redirection into the Knee-Slide, keep your hand posted on top of their inside-knee to help keep their hips in extension and help prevent them from reclosing their elbow-knee space. When you secure Side-Control, remember to draw your elbows down after locking up your grip, and also keep your hips from rising up high or too far forward across your opponent's sagital axis, i.e. their center-line.
