Marcelo and Jake Shields discuss how to sweep or escape from the half guard while your opponent is trying to pass with Underhook & Head Control. This is where the Bridge Escape comes in handy; quickly switch your figure-four from the outside so you may post your inside foot solidly onto the mat to generate power for your bridge. If you don't turn him over, at least you've managed to open up enough space to build a frame and make more room to try a different move. This sweep works especially well for when an opponent decides to apply the traditional "no hands" half guard pass by using his instep to pry off your legs. Not only is this activating a weaker muscle group, it aligns your hips in a manner that is easy to manipulate if you time it correctly with the the Bridge Escape. Marcelo goes on to explain his preference for the Over Under Pass vs Half Guard, in which he continually drops his weight off to the side on his opponent's thigh until they tire. Now he can apply a stomping motion rather than a kick to squeeze his knee through the half guard. Tyga points out that Marcelo keeps his trapt leg somewhat straight to offer more weight onto the inside of his opponent's thigh.
