Underhook and Head vs Half Guard, Over Under Pass vs Half Guard
Marcelo advises on the proper technique and posture for executing his half guard pass with an underhook. Hold the Underhook & Head Control tightly, hiding your head from the Frame Escape, and never abandon the control for a different one; Underhook & Head Control is hard to come by against a game opponent, and it's only a matter of time before you score if you follow the protocol, so hold it for as long as it takes to pass. Many people fail to emulate Marcelo's style in one major particular aspect, in terms of the base necessary for this pass: You must keep your hips low, knees apart facing the mat, with your lower body weight centered on the inside of your opponent's thigh. Sure, if your opponent raises his thigh off of the mat, and sufficient lubrication is present, Marcelo may opt to pass to the mount with the more common half-guard pass, i.e. using his shin and instep to pry his leg free. However, if the guard is too tight for this, drop your weight onto his thigh, pinning his knee to the mat, and place the sole of your foot on top of his knee to press your own knee out (like unsheathing a sword). Lock your leg out straight, muscles tensed, if you wish to avoid injury to your knee joint while passing against a tight half.
