3 Part Lesson — Marcelo shows us how to get underneath and sweep an opponent who is kneeling: [I] Starting from Butterfly Guard, gain the inside space with Double Under Control, thus allowing you to raise the opponent with your hooks and lift his leg, letting it slide down into 1Leg X. Find the far sleeve and make a grip; your opponent will no longer be able to defend by posting against the Hook Sweep. [II] If you encounter trouble catching the opponent's ankle in 1Leg X, opt for the underhook on the leg instead and trap the sleeve for the Hook Sweep Variation from Partial X, n.b; since you are farther underneath the opponent's base with an underhook, kick your hooks forward rather than laterally into the direction of the compromised hand. [III] Making the sleeve grip is a matter of surprise. Do not telegraph your intentions by fighting for the grip before you are ready to launch either sweep. Nevertheless, if you cannot grab the sleeve to preemptively recounter his post, perform the footwork of the technical stand, or standing with base, to hoist the opponent's ankle and sweep him with the traditional X-Guard Takedown Sweep.
