3 Part Lesson — Marcelo informs his class on how to turn the tables on an opponent moments before being passed: [I] If your opponent manages to surprise you, leaving no other recourse but to capture his leg in Half Guard, avoid letting him or her close around your upper body with an Underhook or Crossface for Underhook & Head Control. Do so by widely framing against the opponent's near shoulder, thus allowing you to keep enough distance to insert a Butterfly Hook and hit a Collar & Elbow Control Hook Sweep from Half Guard. [II] If your opponent lands too heavily with his hips, use your shin to wedge between and shield him from passing any farther. Distance yourself with the Z Guard to recompose your bottom leg back to Half Guard before switching from Z to Butterfly Half for the Hook Sweep. [III] Make sure to shield the opponent away with you shin at an angle pointing toward his shoulders to avoid getting smashed with a Folding Pass or Knee Weave Pass.
