2 Part Lesson — Marcelo buys himself time by stepping on his opponent's arm: [I] If you need more time to break open your opponent's Closed Guard while standing, forestall his Double Ankle Sweep by stepping directly onto one of his biceps as you pop up to your feet. Once broken, step one foot back and leave one in front as a lead for passing. [II] Whichever leg you leave in front for your opponent to grab after the break, make sure it is sturdy against any possibly attacks. If you see your opponent lean his guard to the left or right, choose a pass that fits the opening presented, e.g. -- if lies facing the outside of your lead, cut both knees across his leg for a Double Knee Pass or Knee Outside Pass. If he lies facing inside your lead leg, cut over with a Knee Slide or Standing Step Pass.
