2 Part Lesson — Marcelo attempts to explain the pattern behind Hand-fighting: [I] If your opponent has control of your upper body through one side, the side opposite on your lower body cannot be exposed. You must protect the diagonal; e.g., if your opponent claims 2on1 on your Right Hand Side, you cannot raise up your Left Leg without offering a low resistance Hook Sweep. Switch your base and break the grip. If he switches control, say, for Collar & Elbow, then you too must switch your feet to base in the direction opposite of the new sweep. [II] If your opponent uses the 2on1 not for the sweep, but to take what remains after you adjust and defend, you have to be prepared to counter his next movement as well. In the case of the 2on1, if the opponent lets go to grab your foot or pick it up with his hook, you must parry out of his reach. If he tries to grab it with his hand, circle out; if he tries to pick it up with his Butterfly hook, circle your ankle in.
