3 Part Lesson -- Marcelo evades heel-hooks and calf-slicers: If your opponent snares your leg in 50/50 or Outside-Ashigarami, push down on his or her shin and clear your knee to the outside. [02:51] Deny your opponent an opportunity to off-balance you when he or shes attacks with a reap; make grips one both legs for control. Press down on the one shin to clear your knee while you hold the other leg from kicking out your base. [07:26] Starting in One-Leg-X-Guard, work with a partner defending leg-lock attacks. Be very mindful of the dangers inherent to heel-hooking; if you are caught, don't spin wildly to escape, and prepare to verbally tap well before your joint gives to the pressure. If you catch a heel-hook, don't crank it; give your partner ample time to recognize the danger. This style of training will certainly lead to an inaccurate sense of finishing confidence due to some false positives, but it's a safer way to experience these submissions.
