2 Part Lesson — Marcelo addresses an opponent who attacks your feet while hanging onto Closed Guard: [I] Control your opponent's sleeve on the same side you plan on stepping up to build your base for a Standing Closed Guard Break. When his guard snaps open, immediately fill the space with your body into the Half Mount position. Gain a passing control to continue passing out of the Half Guard; this can be an Underhook & Head Control or Over/Under Control. Don't give your opponent an opportunity to fill the space you make from the break with his legs. [II] If your opponent avoids letting you grab his arms, try lifting him up off the ground to put pressure on his ankles when you stand. If he fights to stay down, be aware of his underhook to your ankle. If you get knocked back, sit back up into his Closed Guard avoiding the Triangle. If he reaches across for your far foot, drop back down to your knees. When he reaches again, intercept his arm behind his back and hold onto wrist as you work to break open his guard and pass.
