2 Part Lesson — Marcelo shares insight on one of his most successful methods for forcing the Half Guard: [I] Handfight for the opportunity to dive forward onto your opponnet, connecting your shoulder to his chest and driving him flat on his back with your toes. It is important to differentiate between the low hip posture of a Sprawl and this driving entry; note that, if your hips are dropping down and away, you will lose the connection between your upper bodies. Transfer from the Overhook to the Crossface, clasping your hands together in the Half Mount with Underhook & Head Control. [II] If your feet slip while trying to drive the opponent flat on his back, replace them with your knees to continue the traction. Splay out to the side away from the bottom leg's ability to recover back guard as you continue to drive forward for chest to chest contact. Once you've established a balanced upper body lock, free your knee from his Half Guard by stepping on top of his thigh with the sole of your outside foot and push off of it to climb out of the hold.
