Breaking Gi Grips vs Closed Guard, Breaking the Closed Guard
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo explains a grip-break sequence from inside the Closed Guard: [I] If your opponent tries to break your grip on his jacket and gain the Cross Sleeve Control, grab onto his same-side wrist and combine a push-pull to free your other hand. If you can grab onto his other same-side wrist with your freed hand as you pop up to place pressure on his knee, try; if he avoids letting you make the grip, carry on with the Standing Break. When you land, pinning his knee down with both hands, remember to remain in good base and be prepared for any upcoming attacks from the Open Guard. [II] If your opponent recaptures your sleeve after the Grip Break, try ripping free before he can settle his squeeze. If not, circle your hand around his grip and make a counter-grip from above, pinning down his hand onto his belly. Once more, use your other hand to place pressure atop his grip and strip yourself free of his control. Smack his grip with your opposite hand upon raising your base and latch onto his pants. If he tries to rock your hands back down within reach of his grips, remain strong and upright rather than granting him another opportunity to tie you back up.
