Marcelo and Munchie discuss a thread of interconnected concepts and ideas after training the afternoon Advanced Class. Passing the Half Guard with Underhook & Head Control against a larger, strong opponent is a matter of not letting him control your arms from underneath to set up an angle change followed by an escape. The bottom player must be under constant duress where his only strategy is survival. This can be accomplished by grinding the position and seeking dominance over his arm, pinning it to his head. When the opportunity arises to Take-the-Back or to sink a Guillotine Choke, it is important to throw your chest/shoulder into position rather than just your arms. This is most evident in the example of the Flying/Diving Guillotine. This habit allows you to better follow the opponent when he tries to resist the position or submission. It is important to train whenever it is possible to do so, even with tournaments looming in the future. There is always room for improvement and study. Going hard during a match is important, but you must combine the intensity with redirection, otherwise you will exhaust due to your predictability.
