3 Part Lesson — Marcelo talks about Grip Fighting (Kumite Arasoi) and Energy Management: [I] Immediately react to your opponent's advances, no matter how small or seemingly trivial and innocuous. If he moves, you move. Don't exaggerate; simply match his speed and intensity so that he cannot build up a more formidable problem for you to solve. It is better to keep alert and busy defending many small problems than it is to let things get too far out of hand and need a much bigger expenditure to escape. [II] If your opponent develops a timing to get ahead by quickly switching to another tactic after you defend the initial attempt, quickly find where he wants to go next and block it from continuing. After you've neutralized his offense, respond back with a plan to improve your position. [III] Beware of the Double Leg Takedown. It is one of the few techniques that doesn't warn you ahead of time with the onset of a grip. If you pull guard, start with a control before you drop down. Top is much faster than bottom so you can't give up too much ground too early.
