2 Part Lesson — Marcelo shows how he escapes the much dreaded inside-heel-hook from the 50/50: [I] Immediately begin hand-fighting for grips on the opponent's arms and head, and close the distance with urgency. Prevent the opponent from locking down on your foot under his or her armpit while keeping yourself balanced and connected upright, forward, and heavy. Carefully, that is, without slapping your sparring partner's face with your foot, swing your leg across his or her torso to the opposite side of the body. Drive your knee down heavily on this side, forcing the opponent into and Empty-Half-Guard or Broken 50-Zero Position. Form control over the opponent's upper body and initiate a pass after swinging your foot behind your knee neutralizing the leg-lock threat. [II] If your foot is stuck in between, on top of the opponent's chest, and cannot readily make over to the same-side (i.e. away from the armpit of the Inside Heelhook), leap up and boot the back of the opponent's leg with your basing foot. Use this quick stomp to extract your knee from in between the opponent's legs and follow-up with a neutral recovery.
