2 Part Lesson — Marcelo opens the Closed Guard against the Muscle/Waiter Sweep: [I] If your opponent under-hooks your lead ankle with their arm to sweep you while attempting to break open his or her Closed Guard, keep your leg slightly bent and strongly engaged against the direction of their pull. Try to keep your foot heavy and connected on the mat while you work to place pressure on the knee for the break. If the opponent lifts your foot up off the mat, maintain your balance and continue to block the opponent from resting his hip on top of your thigh above the knee. However, if you succumb to the off-balance and fall, land on your butt and continue to fight for the break. Don't allow the opponent to control your lead arm and keep a solid grip with your opposite hand to avoid the danger of the Triangle. Retract your leg from the opponent's arms if it didn't all ready get released during the fall. Come up on top in base and outside of the opponent's Closed Guard. If you are small, be wary of the opponent's ability to enclose his or her guard around your Combat Base. [II] If your opponent intentionally drops out of Closed to attack your leg, particularly by entering into a K-Guard, immediately call upon the instilled reaction of lifting your entire leg up and out of the opponent's control. If your non-lead leg remains in front after you extract our foot, follow-up with an identical removal of your leg before proceeding forward.
