Hand Fighting vs Butterfly Guard → Knee Slide Pass vs Open Guard
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo shows how to aggressively attack the Open Guard: [I] If your opponent is seated upright in front of you, your hands must be actively engaged in the Hand-Fight for Grips (Kumite-arasoi, Kumi-gata, et cetera). Take the initiative before your opponent has an opportunity to find an offensive option; keep the hands of the opponent behind a kinetic barrier generated by the interception of your hands acting as a wall. When you create an opening or gap in the opponent's posture (Suki, Kuzushi, Seme, et al.) thrust your knee, followed by your hip, through the space landing into Side Control. Apply a base akin to the Modified/Broken Scarf-Hold (Kuzure-Kesagatame) or Hip-Switch(-ed) Position to hold the opponent down and secure with an Underhook. [II] The same measures can be employed when an opponent is resting on his back and awaiting your (obligatory, in the case of sport jiu-jitsu contest) engagement from the standing or kneeling positions. This time however, you will be gripping the opponent's legs to create an opening or timing for the Knee Slide Pass Attack. Like before with the Upper Body Control against the Seated Butterfly Guard, you cannot expect to hold the window open for very long before your opponent finds a suitable counter-action; quickly shoot your knee through (not across the leg from inside to outside, but over the pelvic region and lateral to the stomach/chest) into Side Control.
