Gi Grip Break vs Half Guard
2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo deals with a Collar Grip from Half Guard (Top): You must address your opponent's grip on you collar before attempting a pass out of his or her Half Guard; otherwise you may run the risk of getting caught in some variation of a Loop Choke or possibly get swept. Make grips on the pants for base and pop up to your feet; dedicate both hands to the opponent's sleeve/arm and yank it away from your collar to strip the grip. Immediately, look to pass the guard as soon as you clear the Collar Grip. You can make a grip on the pants again and pass to either side depending on what you prefer and what is available given the circumstances. [03:37] Don't grab your opponent's arms to break the Collar Grip too early, that is, before you've stabilized your base on your feet. If your opponent makes a strong movement while your hands are busy dealing with the grip, you may not have recourse for posting out against the off-balance. Grab the opponent's legs and/or torso for support so that you can rise up into a stance where you can keep your position long enough to handle the problem of the control over your collar.
