Breaking the Closed Guard
3 Part Lesson -- Marcelo shows 3 different ways of breaking open the Closed Guard: Identify which arm your opponent intends to Underhook your leg as you stand, possibly for a Muscle Sweep. When you stand up, keep this targeted leg away from your opponent's reach by maintaining a mobile staggered stance. You can control the sleeve of the arm on the side they want to control your leg with an Underhook. This can be implemented on either sleeve. [07:23] If you cannot find your base or are fearful of your opponent's ability to control your legs with their arms while holding you inside the Closed Guard, you can opt to pick them up off the mat. Keep your elbows in tight against your body as you look to push down and away on the opponent's pants while they hang from Closed Guard. [12:54] If all else fails, you can give yourself even more uninterrupted time on your feet to help break open your opponent's Closed Guard by first controlling the hands and then stepping on their biceps.
