2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo conveys his approach to Half Guard: The battle for the Underhook (ipsalateral; i.e. juxtaposed directly adjacent to your leg entanglement that nominally constitutes a "½" Guard) will make or break your effectiveness from the bottom position. Pummel until you can secure a grip behind your opponent with the Underhook, and pull yourself close to their upper body, turning up onto your side to take an attacking angle. Escape your hip so that you can pummel your top leg inside for a Butterfly Hook while retaining your Half-guarding (Crowbar, Staple, Quarter-Hook, et al.) bottom leg. Trap your opponent's far-arm to prevent a post against your Hook Sweep from Half-Butterfly. [04:01] If your opponent secures a collar-grip to frame with a stiff-arm and prevent you from pummeling for your Underhook, dedicate both hands to the grip and strip it away from your jacket. Immediately, sit up and close the distance; you can go for the Underhook, or keep control of their sleeve/wrist and pin it bent against your chests for a sweep to the reverse side.
