Breaking Gi Grips vs Closed Guard > Breaking the Closed Guard
2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo meticulously avoids danger in the Closed Guard: Before you try to break out of the Closed Guard, you must run through a checklist of potential sweep and submission dangers. Each threat has an associated grip configuration that you need to recognize and appropriately address. Particularly, if your opponent has a Cross Collar Grip, you need to break the grip before attempting to advance your position. Once you break the grip, keep hold of your opponent's arm so that they cannot readily re-grip your jacket. [05:23] If your opponent pulls out the skirt of your jacket, try your best to strip it away and control your opponent's arms before they can pass it behind your head. If your opponent is able to pass your lapel behind your neck and then switch his or her grip, immediately grab their free hand and duck yourself out of the weave. You may need to smack their arm out of the way to help clear your head from the entanglement. If there's no room to duck under, keep your posture and maintain tension to help loosen the grip. If it doesn't loosen enough to break, you have to stand up with your opponent and continue working from there.
