2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo: If your opponent performs a Back-Step while you are playing Half Guard, you must be wary of two different possible options; 1) your opponent may try to pass, and 2) your opponent might look to attack your legs. Luckily, these are mutually exclusive; your opponent cannot readily apply both tactics simultaneously and must choose only one or the other. It is your job to consider both and recognize which your opponent attempts after back-stepping. If your opponent holds your upper body close, he or she is passing. If your opponent looks away from your torso and grabs at your legs, they're obviously hunting for a leglock submission. If they pass, push them away with frames and recover your guard; if they go for your knees and feet, underhook their head and shoulder to pull them away from your legs.[05:00] If your opponent is holding your own leg with a figure-four lock, it will be hard to free your knee and recover your guard. Uncross your legs holding the Reverse Half Guard and look to recover or sweep your opponent. If at any point your opponent leans away from your upper body and stops passing, make sure you have control over their sleeves/wrists/hands/arms so that they cannot make a meaningful connection onto your legs while you recover.
