Lesson Part 2 of 2 -- Marcelo escapes from getting finished by a rear collar choke: Deny your opponent the ingredients necessary for finalizing a choke from the back position. Simply leaning your weight away from the choking grip is a passive resistance that already makes it harder for your opponent to finish. Reinforce this by actively driving your feet into the mat and bridging your weight onto your opponent's upper body. Ideally though, you should aim to place your shoulders on the mat to escape from the position; however, if your opponent is keen on seeking a finish, you may not be able to readily escape. Instead, focus on survival and making it difficult for your opponent to succeed. Deprive them of the positional elements required to solidify a finish pressure against your neck. If your opponent tries to maneuver your body low and underneath their legs to create an angle for the throttle, quickly push your torso more parallel with theirs. After enough failed attempts, even the strongest players will find it difficult to maintain their grip over your jacket long enough before you can make an escape and break out of the hold.
