Lesson Part 1 of 3 -- Marcelo recovers and reverses from Half-Guard: If your opponent manages to force you to play from Half-Guard and also wins the same-side (ipsilateral; e.g. you control your opponent's right leg in half guard, but your opponent pummels against your left-arm with their right-arm) Under-Hook, don't let them combine that mistake with control over your opposite arm (in this particular case as shown, Marcelo's constantly battles his opponent in a hand-fight to win control of the inside space with his right-hand/arm. If your opponent finds an Under-Hook or in many cases, an Over-Hook, and pins your free elbow down and away from your body, they are much closer to passing your Half Guard. Marcelo keeps the space for this battle open by creating a Frame with his left-forearm while turning up onto his right side hip. Hip-Escape to make room for a transition from the Half-Guard to the Butterfly-Guard (Hooks-Guard, V-Guard, TK-Guard, Inside-Hooks Guard, et al.). Use the Butterfly Hook to help make even more space to pummel for Double Under Control from Butterfly. If your opponent is wearing a jacket, feed the skirt-tail bottom of their kimono top behind their back with your Double Under-Hooks and pass it into your opposite hand for a Lapel-Assisted Under-Hook. Once tightened and the slack is run out of the grip, look to control your opponent's opposite side elbow so you can pin it inward for a Hook-Sweep from the Butterfly-Guard with Rear Cross Lapel and Elbow Control.
