1-Part Advanced Lesson -- Marcelo shares options as an alternative to disengaged supine guard-play: If your opponent manages to find separation from your Seated/Open Butterfly-Guard while they are in a standing posture, it may pose some difficulty in your defenses; typically, a standing passer has far greater mobility and momentum to impose compared to your sedentary situation. Commonly, the answer is to lay back flat and rely on guard-recovery skills and flexibility in order to handle the oncoming pressure and threat of standing passes, e.g. the Toreando-Pass with heavily-placed grips made on your pants. Marcelo prefers to stand back up to his feet if he feels his opponent is trying to take advantage of this particular mode of passing; from standing, he can look to pull guard again with an amplified attack or even look to take them down. However, there remains an opportunity to stay grounded if you can catch your opponent before they have a chance to begin standing pressure. Latch onto both of your opponent's collars and yank them forward onto your Butterfly-Hooks and lift them overhead, launching them directly into your X-Guard. Perform a Technical Get-Up with their leg shelved on top of your shoulder to finish a Take-Down Sweep. Try to keep your hands busy controlling your opponent's leg as you rise up, but if you need assistance, you may quickly post your hand on the ground to help as long as your head remains tight and upright against their leg. Remember to not let your arm succumb to manipulation upon landing the sweep so as to not find yourself immediately defending against a Triangle Choke. You can make a grip on the inside of their pants with your fingers facing out to stifle this potential threat.
