3-Part Advanced Lesson -- Marcelo demonstrates his Elbow-Push Escape and a series of connected contingencies: If your opponent bypasses your legs and winds up closing in onto your side, try defending your position by applying a stiff-arm into their triceps before they have a chance to climb up your body for chest-on-chest control. Use your posting arm to help maintain enough space for you to escape your hips, knees, and feet back out in front of your opponent. If you notice that your opponent is fighting hard against your hand while you're attempting to lock out your arm for the Elbow-Push Escape, quickly switch for a Sit-Up Escape; rock your legs and swing up onto your opposite hand while releasing their triceps. Replace your post with a hug around their back, grabbing onto their far-side trap, and use it to either take top position behind them if they are slow to react, or simply cut your legs away from them and turn over onto your knees to face them in a neutral position. [3:19] Rely on your legs to help generate enough momentum to sit-up if your opponent is beating your Elbow-Push and remaining heavy on top of you. Don't let your opponent squeeze your knees together after sitting up; splay your legs apart to make it difficult for your opponent to corral them together. If you cannot readily swing your feet away from your opponent to escape from their control, run your legs towards them and turn down onto your knees instead; simulate throwing a hip-toss into your opponent's base so that you can create enough room to free your legs out from underneath of them. [5:49] Once you commit to the Sit-Up against their Reverse Side-Control attempt, you cannot switch back for the initial Elbow-Push Escape as there is not longer enough space to meaningfully latch onto their triceps and stiffen out your arm. Trust your connection with your opponent during the Hip-Throw action and use it to help raise your opponent away from the ground so that you have plenty of room to free your legs from their control.
