Breaking Grips vs Spider Guard, Over Under Pass vs Spider Guard
3-Part Fundamental Lesson -- Bernardo shows some of his favorite ways to pass the Spider-Guard: If your opponent finds Double-Sleeve Control and places one foot your hip and their other onto your biceps, maintain a strong base and work to clear off their grips from your upper-body; firstly, make a grip onto the inside of their pants to help push their knee away and remove their foot-on-hip control. Next, walk towards the foot-on-biceps control (not away from it into a possible sweep) and pummel your hand inside to pin their leg down to the mat. Quickly, fire your knee across their thigh for a Knee-Cut Pass while holding their pants until you can release them and find a way to secure Side-Control. [2:07] If you cannot pummel your hand inside against the Stirrup-Control (i.e. foot-on-biceps), make a Pistol-Grip from the outside with the cuff of their pant-leg and throw a hooking punch into the air to clear the leg. After punching the leg by, release your grips and establish Side-Control. [4:56] If your opponent tries to recover their guard back by escaping their hips outward after you've thrown the Punch-Pass, simply transition directly into Bernardo's bread-n-butter Over/Under Pass while still holding the Pistol-Grip on their pants.
