Arm Pull vs Over Hook from Closed Guard
Marcelo advises Mark on how to safely and successfully pummel out of an opponent's strong Over-Hook game from Full-Guard: Ideally, one should try to dominate the hand-fighting exchange and assume double inside biceps-ties to prevent your opponent from controlling your arms and breaking down your upright posture. However, if your opponent is able to break you forward and encircles one of your arms with an Over-Hook (i.e. occupying the inside-space by enlacing from outside-in, as opposed to inside-out with an Under-Hook), don't allow them to hip-out towards that trapped side; use your knee to help corral your opponent's hips and place your head high to keep them squared-up. Turn your palm upward and rotate your hand thumb-first towards the centerline to pummel your arm out of the Over-Hook. If you do not readily have the room to fit your forearm in between your torsos, drive forward on your toes with your head by theirs to make space for the pummel. Don't let your wrist stay too bent or relaxed as you look to escape, otherwise you may inadvertently catch yourself in a wrist-lock on their hip. By keeping your shoulder-line in parallel with your opponent's, you deter them from easily lassoing their leg in front of your face for an Omoplata or a Gogoplata as you turn your arm for the escape.
