Collar and Elbow Control vs Butterfly, Knee Slide Pass vs Butterfly, Underhook and Head Control from Side Control, Back Step Pass vs Half Guard, North South Choke vs Half Guard
2 Part Technique - Collar and Elbow Control versus your opponent's butterfly guard is a great gripping option for when he isn't allowing you to obtain an initial underhook nor letting your force him onto his back for passing. Use this control to drive your knee across his thigh, landing your hip against his, passing his guard. Establishing the Side Control with the Scarfhold, commonly used for winning a pinfall, isn't very useful in terms of jiu-jitsu, because it is hard to transition out of the pin without exposing yourself to the threat of reversal. Instead, make sure to land upright with your elbow on his chest during the Knee Slide, so you can easily secure Underhook and Head Control after landing. If your opponent dedicates his efforts in stopping your leg from sliding free of the half guard, switch directions by back-stepping your free leg to the other side for the Back Step Pass. Control his ability to turn and face you during the back-step; this will grant you the opportunity to catch his neck in a vulnerable position for the North South Choke.
