Breaking Gi Grips from Standing → Guard Pull → Collar & Elbow Short Hook Sweep
3 Part Lesson — Marcelo can't break his opponent's grips: [I] While standing, avoid letting your opponent make his grips; if you can intercept his arm before he has a chance to settle and harden his fist, you can stifle his offense. If he does make his grips, use both hands on his sleeve and wrist to yank his hand off of your collar, and follow up by striking the palm of his remaining grip. If you cannot break off this last grip, try pulling your sleeve into your hand as you raise your elbow up and out of his control. [II] If your opponent is persistent and pulls you close after making his grips, immediately make your own Collar & Elbow Control grips. Place your foot on his thigh as you pull guard and kick out his post to sweep him over. [II] If his leg is out of place for setting your foot on his leg, simply give him a pull forward as you drop and pull guard to cause off-balance.
