3 Part Technique - Prevent the opponent's attacks and reset into a neutral position with the thought of urgency. Embody the spirit of having only one chance to perform techniques correctly. If an opponent attempts to establish Side Control at your hips, sit up against his position. Since the opponent is not controlling your head, you will have the mobility to escape using your upper body. If the opponent turns into you, Hip Roll against his counter while controlling his hands to prevent back attacks.

eskowron, fyi I posted my own experience on the hip roll escape in the forums (under the topic "hip roll escape").

For a long time my training partners were able to loop their arm under my neck and make a bow-and-arrow grip on my lapel. They could threaten with the choke or threaten my back; while they often couldn't finish it wasn't a position I wanted to be in.

Eventually I realized that by curling my body away so that my head and shoulders are from the opponent's chest and head-control arm, and tucking my chin in before the granby roll really helped reduce their ability to make a good grip. Also, their usually means their weight was on my hip instead of my upper body, which gives me a lot more power to push them away with my hip roll.

If you look at Marcelo's position at 4:50, he has actually shrimped his hips into Paul. This makes his head and shoulders far away from the opponent, and Paul would have to extend his left arm in order to reach Marcelo's left shoulder (which is not a strong enough grip to take the back).

Not sure if that helps, but those are my two cents!

eskowron, I think that's the reasoning behind controling that arm while doing the hip roll. The problem I have though is that my opponent sometimes feeds his bottom leg in as a hook and gets a lockdown, entering the truck and using it to finish a leg lock or take my back. I try to keep my bottom elbow tight to close that space to prevent this as I roll.

For the second technique: what's to keep the guy on top from just falling to his side, throwing his bottom arm around your neck then lifting you up (as mg teaches from seatbelt) so that he can establish a full seat belt).
I like the hip roll, but I don't see how both the neck and back aren't very exposed when you're on your side turned away from your oponent there, with both arms downward...?
