3 Part Lesson — Marcelo examines a situation wherein his opponent has turtled and is defending hooks: [I] Upon noticing that your opponent is preventing you from setting your hooks for Back Mount or Crucifix, begin looking for opportunities to capture the neck in a Rear Naked Choke. Shove your arm under his neck (repeatedly until you can then), clamp down his shoulder-blade, remove his counter-grip, and clasp the Gable Grip for the Straight Choke variation. [II] If you realize that your opponent has chosen to escape from the Turtle Position, immediately refasten the Seatbelt and look to catch your Back-hooks as he rolls away. Continue with your incessant attack on his neck, but be wary of his shoulders escaping to the mat. The idea here is to use the advantage of the opponent's limited visibility to surprise him with the choke. [III] On account of the asymmetric nature of the Seatbelt Control, keep in mind that if you land on the side of your choking-arm, the opponent will more than likely attempt to bring his shoulder to the mat when you remove your arm; attack the choke as he escapes.
