3 Part Lesson — Marcelo stresses the importance of diligent hand-fighting when returning back to stand-up from the ground. Prepare to be alert and loose when standing back up; don't allow the fatigue of grappling on the ground beforehand to slow your pace and tighten your hand-fighting. In terms of distance management, always give the opponent what he doesn't want; if he wants to close the gap, circle out. If he is conservative, advance forward and attack. You can win a psychological advantage over your opponent in this transition from the ground back to your feet if you appear active and ready to work regardless of your takedown skills. Never let the opponent manipulate your jacket; take away his ability to control of the pace of the match.

[I] Opponent makes Collar & Sleeve Grips:
A. Early Defense (as opponent reaches for your collar)
1. Knock or push the hand away before it can grasp your collar.
a) Deflect contact with quick hand movements; don't let the grip settle.
b) Be prepared to work fast when returning back to your feet.
B. Late Defense (opponent hardens his hand on your lapel)
1. Rescue your collar with both hands
a) Grab ahold of his grip; several options are available in haste;
(i) Double up on his wrist.
(ii) Double up on his sleeve.
(iii) Grab his Wrist & Sleeve.
b) Throw your body backward as you yank his grip forward.
(i) This may take several attempts before his grip breaks.
2. Clear the auxiliary grip if made on your sleeve while breaking the primary collar grip.
a) Spin your torso away with your elbow/forearm parallel with the ground.
(i) Don't expose your back for too long; return back quickly to face him.
b) Back away to avoid a follow-up shot onto your legs after you clear the sleeve grip.
(i) Regroup and be faster in hand-fighting to disallow him from making a solid grip again.
[II] Opponent made a Strong Sleeve Grip; notice the simple spin-away tug is inadequate:
A. Monkey-Paw Grip on Sleeve Cuff
1. Circle over top of his grip.
2. Grab his wrist and rip straight up.
a) Continue defending the opposite side from the Collar Grip.
B. Judo "Sode" Sleeve Grip
1. Grab your own sleeve with your fingertips and the heel of your palm
2. Yank upward with own sleeve in hand to break his grip.
a) Continue defending the opposite side while breaking the Sleeve Grip.
[III] Opponent makes an Overhead (Russian-Style) Grip.
A. Try to deflect his grip preemptively
B. If the grip is made.
1. Wrap an Overhook from the inside-out.
a) Make a grip on his belt.
2. Move your hips away with a low, bent over stance.
a) Lay heavily onto his arm to force a change.
