2 Part Lesson — Marcelo stymies Open Guard Attacks after Breaking the Closed Guard: [I] Don't allow your opponent to easily start his or her game after you apply a Standing Break to the Closed Guard; point your knee outward, keep your elbows closed, and drop your shoulder low to block the De la Riva-, Spider-, and Lasso-Hooks respectively. Stay low and hold the opponent's belt, sleeve, or pants with a dominant grip. Be prepared to posture out of a submission like an Armbar or Triangle once you break open the Closed Guard. [II] If your opponent manages to bring his or her foot in front of your arms for Spider or Lasso Guard, immediately look to use your knees to pop their heels out of the crooks of your arms. You may also drag the foot down in between your knees and sit atop the shin to avoid the hooks.
