2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo asks his students to train sweeping from 50/50: Enter into the 50/50 from an Open Guard of your choice; whether it be from a Cross Guard, Tripod Guard, Goes Guard, or even an Inverted Guard depending upon your familiarity and flexibility. Knock back your partner and come up on top looking to establish top position and pin him or her for sweep points. Stay in the position and have your partner work to sweep you backwards out of the hold-down so you seesaw back and forth, accumulating experience in an all-too-common, modern-day competitive scenario. [02:24] Build up your base when attempting to sweep your opponent from the bottom position of the 50/50. Rise up onto your elbow and begin elevating your hips so that you are kneeling in the position. Don't come all the way up to your feet with your partner, and be careful not to have him or her land on top of your inside foot during the transition; otherwise you risk possibly serious injury to your ankle and/or knee joint.
