2-Part Fundamental Lesson -- Special guest instructor, Thomas Lisboa, teaches some basic self-defense tactics for a standing attacker against bottom position: If threatened by an opponent while you are stuck on the ground, it is important to not rise up off the floor at an inopportune time, giving your opponent an chance to strike you in a moment of vulnerability; stay seated and maintain a forearm in between your face and the aggressor to ward away an unforeseen attack as your opposite arm helps support your base from behind. If your opponent rushes you, immediately throw your back to the mat and meet their hips with strong set of frames from your feet. If they circle around you both directions, alternate the positioning of your hands to follow their movement. [1:23] If your opponent delivers a kick towards your legs, intercept their shin with the bottom of your foot from a kick of your own. Keep your hands by your face to protect yourself from punches when you are holding them back with defensive frames from your legs. If your opponent cannot be struck with a kick of your own and you also don't have enough room to properly stand up safely, stay down and utilize a rocking motion with your feet prepared to catch a forward advance. When your opponent retreats from the deterrent of potential kicks from your downed position, take the space and cautiously perform the technical-stand (reverse 'negativa', via capoeira) back up to your feet in a standing guard position with your hands high up to defend your head.
