Marcelo shares his thoughts on which details make for a successful knee-cut pass for gi and nogi: Making a Knee-Slide technique work for you as a pass or an advancing connection, perhaps into a different pass or some pathway to the back, involves finding a gap in your opponent's elbow-knee space, breaching your lower-body across their hip-line, and subsequently using your upper-body to solidify a winning hold. This may even mean throwing your hips so far through, you end up landing closer to North/South as opposed to a more traditional Side-Control finish. Turn yourself over from your hip on the ground and begin driving yourself into a chest-to-chest connection with a pronated base. Use whatever grips you can find to help pull yourself in close to establish top-position.
