Marcelo offers Joe some advice on how to slow down a fast opponent from bottom position: Whenever you are faced with an opponent is relying on speed and angles to bypass your guard, look to ensnare their leg inside your Half-Guard. Pulling half will allow you to find your bearing and keep your opponent in front of you long enough to build up an attack of your own. However, you do not necessarily want to stay in Half-Guard for very long; ultimately, you need to quickly transition towards a sweep, back-take, or submission right after getting settled with your grips. If your opponent is quick to get a hold of your pants for a Toreando Pass, you should instead deny access to your legs entirely with superior hand-fighting skills. If you are getting beat right at the on-set against a particular opponent, try your best to add one extra piece to your attack at the next reset. Sometimes simply adding one more additional component to your initial entry into guard-play can make things work out in your favor.
