Marcelo shares knowledge about when to expend copious effort: Progression is not just a matter of leading yourself into the right direction positionally, if your opponent is well attuned, they will be anticipating your advancement and will wait to defend only when you open up first. Distracting your opponent's attention away from these key moments is pivotal to finding submission success against high-level competitors. Disguise your transitions and hide your intentions by utilizing erratic off-balancing before you attempt to improve your position. This is particularly the case in a critical set of middle-game positioning, e.g. securing a Body-Lock and trying to pass or take their back from standing with it. Another prominent example is that of the Front-Headlock Position. Increase the intensity of your movements during these decisive battles in order to catch your opponent out of rhythm with their ability to adequately defend.
