Marcelo masterfully explains to Josh how he applies several countermeasures from the Reverse Half-Guard: If your opponent is able to perform a Back-Step against your Half-Guard while also holding onto your back at the shoulder, first crunch up to avoid a strong Cross-Face; if your opponent has a grip on your pants, Figure-4 your legs to prevent the threat of a Knee-Bar. Make a grip around their back to help keep them close and deter a switch of direction towards your feet as you work to clear their grip from your knee by controlling their sleeve. Kick your inside-leg to help generate momentum for a Backwards-Roll over your shoulder while still maintaining upper-body control. You may also pummel your outside-foot underneath of your opponent's trapped leg and use it to kick them over as you bridge off the mat for a modified Hook-Sweep. If your opponent keeps their base on top after you impose an off-balance, immediately look to dedicate both of your hands to breaking your opponent's grip around your near-side shoulder.
