Hip Roll Escape vs Seatbelt Control
Marcelo addresses a common problem with Guard Recovery: If your opponent quickly cuts an angle on you and begins bearing downward for a pass, you may opt for a Hip-Roll Escape (Half-Granby Roll, Gangorra, et al.) to maneuver yourself out of danger. However, if you inadvertantly bring both shoulders up off the mat during the movement, your opponent may be able to capitalize on your back exposure by securing a Seat-Belt Grip around your torso. Make sure that when you try to recover your guard in this fashion, you keep at least one of your shoulder firmly rooted into the mat while working to bring your legs back into play. When facing a competent adversary, if you get behind in the transition, you may have to make a the unsavory choice between giving up the pass or allowing them to take your back.
