2 Part Technique - The best option is to base yourself with a Collar and Knee Control if the opponent attempts to sweep using your sleeves as a control, particularly with De La Riva Guard. If the opponent uses a long De La Riva hook, use the first part of the Back Step Pass and return to your previous position, but with your knee pointing out to counter his hook from coming back inside. If your opponent keeps his leg high after you back step, so stepping back over the De La Riva hook is prevented, or if you feel he will sweep you in the direction of the back step, drop your weight on his leg with your hip and slide your shin across his thigh to Side Control. Quickly switch grips to prevent him from recovering guard.
