3 Part Lesson — Marcelo opts for "Skipping" passed the guard in Nogi: [I] Slowly passing with pressure starting on the legs can prove tediously difficult against a game opponent; they will oftentimes frame and hip escape well before you can move up to the upper body and establish control for the pass. Additionally, if you launch an attack from your knees and forcefully grab the opponent while he is sitting, you immediately signal your intentions and tell him when to defend strongly. If you stand up and try cutting around his legs, he can switch his focus to your knees and prevent you from penetrating deeply. To circumvent these particular problems, formulate your attack in the following manner as suggested per Marcelo's instruction; Sway your base from side to side while keeping his hands busy until you see a gap between the elbow and knee. Pounce your knee and belly through the gap with a Knee Slide Pass and look work hard upon landing at his side. Find the Underhook, whether tight or modified, or run to North/South if the opponent gets the Underhook first. [II] If your opponent is defending well against your cross attack with the Knee-Slide/Cut/Slice et al., perhaps by curling up to defend the space and deflect you from his side, try penetrating though on the opposite side with your knee. This approach allows you at the very least to establish the Half-Mount Position. You may not immediately find an Underhook to continue passing, but you cannot allow the opponent to find an Underhook of his own after you land. Keep your elbows tight until you find an opportunity to capitalize on his reaction. [III] When you launch into the Half Mount, your opponent dictates which direction you will go to finish passing out of the Half Guard. Make sure that you do not leave your outside leg vulnerable to attack; roll your hip over to keep it heavy and avoid getting caught in a leglock by leading with your upper body in parallel with that of the opponent's.
