3 Part Lesson -- Marcelo counters common pass attempts against his X-Guards: While playing 1-Leg X-Guard (Single-Leg X, One-Legged X, Anaconda Guard, Leglock Guard, Ashigarami, Footlock Guard, Guarda Sucuri, Noose, Slash Guard, et al.) you must be ready to hunt your opponent's leg with your hooks if he or she swings outside with a Backstep. Catch the inside of your opponent's thigh with either foot and use the connection to help spin back parallel and realign yourself into position. If your opponent is defending well, it's usually indicative of a need to switch your focus to the opposite leg and transition to a Full X-Guard. Remember to switch your feet first before pummeling under the lead leg with an Underhook. [02:32] Crunch your body and keep your hooks taut if your opponent applies a Backstep from your Full-X. Don't go belly down otherwise you risk planting your face on the mat. Tuck your head inside and ride out the spin. [07:07] Make room for your head to crunch inside by using the grip on the knee to pull your opponent's shin and weight away from your face or chest.
