Kneeling Passes vs Standing Passes
2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo points out the importance of adapting your passing style based on your opponent's vulnerabilities as well as his or her offensive threats: There are a multitude of passing options from the kneeling position against an Open Guard; you can pass over, under, around, and through the opponent's legs depending on what you prefer and what's available. The benefit in this particular style of passing, i.e. from a kneeling position, is that you are generally more stable, harder to lift, and protected against easy Leglock attacks. [03:54] The downside to kneeling passes are as follows; you are slower and must rely therefore rely on top-heavy pressure, and also you are more susceptible to chokeholds, armbars, wristlocks, and shoulderlocks. If you plan on passing from your feet in the standing position against an Open Guard, be sure to always remove your legs from danger when your opponent tries to entangle them. High-step up and out of danger before your knee-line is isolated in a pin.
