2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo defuses two common attacks when standing up to break open the Closed Guard: If your opponent tries to drop down onto your legs and wedge their knee inside yours (X-Hook, K-Hook, Inverted Butterfly, 70/30, Keymaster, Curucuru, et al.), grab onto their knee and pull it up and away from your inner thigh. Work to keep the opponent's guard open and either run around to the farside to pass, or underhook the leg and stack. Your opponent may work to attack your legs with a Cross Guard (K-Guard, Matrix, Kneebar, Calf-Slicer, etc.) the moment you stand up to escape their Closed Guard. You must be ready to pull your opponent's knee out from underneath your leg while still keeping out of the Closed Guard. [07:19] If your opponent does the opposite and places their leg high up and heavy on top of your thigh, they may be looking for a Muscle Sweep (Handstand Sweep, Lumberjack Sweep, et al.) as they underhook your ankle and deprive you of base. Try to stay up on one leg, but if you do fall, don't fall towards the side of your trapped foot. Do your best to fall away from that side, but watch out for the Triangle. Keep working to break out of the Closed Guard while laying on your side as you fight the possibility of the Mount or a recovery back into your opponent's Closed Guard.
