Straight Footlock Escape from Open Guard
Lesson Part 1 of 2 -- Marcelo avoids letting his opponent gain an advantage from a Botinha: Don't let your opponent fully extended their body once they've captured your ankle for the Straight Foot-Lock; while you may not tap to the submission, your opponent may gain a decisive advantage point just for displaying an attempt. If your opponent is slow to fall back after over-hooking your foot, slip your heel out before it's too late. Turn your heel inward toward centerline; this applies to the cross variation as well. Try to ride up on top using your opponent's momentum, keeping close with grips on their jacket. Pull your opponent close and away from your ankle, sticking your leg deeper into their hold. Find a way to bring your free foot underneath you into a kneeling base so you can begin passing and escaping the position.
