2 Part Technique - If your opponent grabs both of your sleeves while holding onto the Closed Guard, assume that he is waiting to transition to the Spider Guard. Although Marcelo knows how to unravel the hooks and pass the Spider Guard, he rarely ever has to because he avoids ever having to do deal with this guard in the first place. The best strategy against the Spider Guard is preemptive, in that, as soon as Marcelo realizes the danger of his opponent pulling Spider Guard, he immediately blocks it from happening by squatting in a low sumo-esque stance and hiding the Spider's targeted areas, i.e. his biceps. Still holding both lapels, drive his knee to the mat with your elbow, and cross your knee over his leg while you pummel for an underhook. If you can't reach deeply for the underhook, grab onto his armpit by the gi instead, and finish the Knee Slide Pass, cleaning off his other grip with your knee. If he pushes you away from the Double Lapel Control, make for grips on his knees, and throw his feet to the floor for the Toreando Pass. To establish the top position, cross his arms over his chest with Double Over Control until he lets go of your sleeves.
