2 Part Lesson — Paul teaches how to defend the Cross Collar Choke while inside Closed Guard after a Double Leg Takedown: [I] While inside the Closed Guard, if your opponent sneaks his hand deep into your jacket, grabbing the collar by the neck of your gi, anticipate his second hand reaching inside as well for the Cross Collar Choke. To defend, simply weave your forearm underneath his first grip as he looks to place his second hand inside, placing your hand on your head and blocking his choke. Be sure to keep your elbow from crossing center-line to avoid giving your opponent a chance to take your back. [II] If your opponent set both grips, collapses his elbows with your weight off the mat to create space around your neck and thwart the choke. Let your opponent expend his energy trying to finish; his efforts are futile as long as you maintain pressure. When ready, break off his grips and reset with posture.
